New York, NY — A Brazilian-owned erectile dysfunction (ED) drugmaker is under fire for its advertising campaign to help women and the US Food and Drug Administration approve Viagra (sildenafil).
The Brazilian company, based in Rio de Janeiro, said the campaign was aimed at helping women who struggle with sexual dysfunction and that they would help doctors prescribe the medication.
“We want to make it easy for people to access this medicine and help them achieve their sexual health goals,” said Dr. Paulo de Morais, a sexual health specialist at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (FUERR).
Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. It is a common condition, which affects 1 in 10 men between the ages of 30 and 50. The condition can cause significant psychological distress, interfere with daily life, and affect the quality of life.
A study in 2021 concluded that women and men taking sildenafil, which is also sold under the brand name Viagra, were more likely to have problems with sexual arousal and satisfaction.
“This study confirmed the efficacy of sildenafil in helping women with sexual problems to access treatment,” said Dr. Paulo de Morais. “It is an important study that can help us to develop better, more effective treatments for this important condition.”
Dr. Paulo de Morais, a sexual health specialist at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (FUERR), said that sildenafil would be used by women as a treatment option for women with low sexual desire.
“This is important because sildenafil is also a drug for the treatment of male sexual disorders,” Dr. Paulo de Morais said.
“This drug is not a cure for sexual disorders and women can take the medication long term. But the drug could be a safe and effective treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction.”
